Good morning. This is the first issue of the new and improved weekly newsletter. Each week, we are going to be sending you a highly researched and useful email that summarizes the week's most important lessons, tips, and strategies around online business and marketing.
The main focus of Copyblogger is to help our readers start, build, and grow successful businesses by helping you execute on effective content marketing.
Due to recent events, this week, we will start with a statement from our founder and CEO, Brian Clark.
We're saddened and angered by the recent deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and a much too long list of black men and women who have unnecessarily perished before them. The scale of the resulting outrage and protests indicate that we're not going back to "normal" anytime soon, and we hope that's a positive thing. The institutionalized racism baked into American society is both disgraceful and unsustainable, and this time things need to change.
We hope the Copyblogger community can take the time to listen and understand the gravity of this situation, to speak out against racial injustice and police brutality, and to take action to help others. We need to look after one another regardless of color, and to fight together for what's right. Thank you for your compassion and commitment to the cause of liberty and justice for all.
Brian Clark
Founder and CEO
Top Content Marketing Resources
1. Why People Don't Want the Real You - Brian Clark delivers a clear and thoughtful article around the idea of authenticity. There is a lot of chatter in marketing about "being authentic."
It could be that authenticity isn't that important. It could be that people want consistency and professionalism. A must read!
2. Amazon Slashes Commission Rates - Although this news came out more than a month ago, we want to take a moment to highlight why it's important.
Many small business owners and entrepreneurs have made great livings by selling Amazon affiliate products through their content. Last April, Amazon cut commission payouts to as low as 1% in some cases.
This is another example of why it's so important to own your brand and not use other big tech platforms as the centerfold of your business. We love affiliate marketing, but for true success you should alwaysβ¦
a) have a website
b) build an email list
c) build your own proprietary products
3. How to Embrace Failure and Learn from Your Mistakes - In our Q&A sessions, we've had a lot of people talking about the fear of failure. As entrepreneurs, failure is something we have to get comfortable with. In this article, John Lee Dumas tells a great story about a podcasting service he was sure would be successful, and why this service ultimately failed.
What did John do? He kept going, he moved on to the next idea, he focused on the process and the journey.
We love John's insight. It's a great learning lesson for anyone.
4. How to Write a Stellar About Page - Why do we neglect our about page?
I once heard someone say that "I don't focus on my about page because no one cares about me." EXACTLY! The about page is a perfect opportunity to tell your reader all the ways that you can help them and be of service to them.
If you look at Google Analytics, a large portion of traffic eventually leads to the about page. People want to know who they're dealing with. For that reason, I highly suggest you read Kaleigh Moore's recent article. It's packed with easy to implement tips that will make a big difference in the success of your about page.
5. Understanding Your Customer Challenges - We love Brian Casel. I like his approach to "productizing" and his willingness to work in public.
He recently published an article about his quest to get a true understanding of his customer. It is an important read for ANYONE who wants to build an audience and create products for their audience.
Our VP, Darrell Vesterfelt, always talks about the importance of understanding your customer. This article is another helpful reminder of why it's so important.
Recent Updates
There is so much going on behind the scenes at Copyblogger. The team and I are building an amazing education platform. We can't wait to show you.
Some quick linksβ¦
- Next week is the launch of the brand new podcast platform. Subscribe to the podcast here.
- Our workshops are now live. We still have to publish two more, but now everyone can have access to our marketing workshops.
Closing Thoughts
As professionals, we need to stay focused and continue to show up every day. When I am struggling to stay focused, I ask myself "what's the next, most important task for me to accomplish?"
Then I focus all my energy on completing that task 100% to completion. It's a tool that has helped me. I hope it helps you.
Stay focused.
Talk to you next week.
