Best of the '80s Weekend
No, I'm not trying to moonlight as your new favorite DJ.
"Best of the '80s Weekend" is a slogan from the radio station KOST 103.5. It's an example of a copywriting "offer" out in the wild.
The goal of the descriptive catchphrase is to get more people to listen to the station. Listeners don't have to pay to listen, but more listeners equals more ad revenue for KOST.
I recently heard a weekend DJ address a somewhat snarky question she received about the slogan.
The listener wrote:
"If it's supposed to be an '80s weekend, why do you play Adele every 5 minutes?"
The DJ replied:
"That's why we call it the 'Best of the '80s Weekend.' We don't only play '80s music. We play great '80s songs you haven't heard in a while, along with today's biggest hits."
Instead of admitting that the catchphrase is inaccurate (it's not), the DJ addressed the objection head-on and clarified the station's offer.
The best salespeople do the same thing.

Choosing a Niche for Your Online Business: 3 Creative Models
If you want your marketing to work, you have to first get specific when choosing a niche for your online business.
You have to understand who your message is for, then speak to that person.
And you have to craft your copywriting offers to serve that person. Present options that appeal to her, that are in line with what she's willing to spend, and that will benefit her in ways she cares about.
One of the first things people do when thinking about building a business online is rush to identify their "niche." And that isn't wrong ... but it's more complicated than it might seem at first.
The word niche doesn't just mean a focused topic. In biology, niche refers to how each type of organism interacts with all of the other organisms in its ecosystem.
It's how a plant or animal fits into the larger context.
Your topic is part of your niche, of course. But so is your audience. And your positioning. Not to mention your potential partners. And the folks who share your content. And the content platforms you publish on.
What are some of the different ways that business owners inhabit their niches?

The Only Question I Want to Hear Writers Ask About AI
Yesterday Tim emailed us about the free webinar AWAI is hosting today called: Is AI About to Replace Human Writers?
Copyblogger founder Brian Clark will be part of the discussion, so if you haven't yet signed up to attend, it's going to be good stuff.
While this is a relevant and interesting topic that affects all writers today, myself included, I'm also an editor. And from an editor's perspective, there's one productive thing that writers can focus on, which can help you no matter how sophisticated AI becomes.
The question I'd like to hear writers asking these days is timeless:
How Can I Become a Better Writer and Editor?
Let's revisit the "Best of the '80s Weekend" I wrote about above.
Here's a tweet the radio station sent out last year ...
June 4th 2022
|
The text of the tweet says, "Best of the '80s Weekend," but the graphic displays a common writing mistake.
It could be:
- 1980s
- '80s, or
- 80s
It's never 80's.
Yet that's what we see here in (presumably) human-generated content.
You wouldn't want to use 80's, because the apostrophe in that case is possessive. 80s is plural, so you would only use the apostrophe to abbreviate the "19" part of 1980s, making it '80s. If you didn't care about abbreviating the "19" part, 80s works as well.
Am I being nit-picky? Perhaps. I don't love it when people on Twitter have pointed out my oversights in the past ... so I'm not trolling KOST on Twitter with this lesson. ;-)
I just wanted to point out to you that humans can currently do better than humans are doing, so let's start there.
Attention to detail is never a waste ... and can make you an in-demand human, even as Battlestar Galactica looks more and more like real life.
Talk with you again soon,
Stefanie Flaxman
