How To (Not) Get ClientsI recently signed a personal brand coaching client. In our first meeting, he told me that he wasn't getting any clients with his content. He showed me all the incredible value he was creating in his blog and social posts and was wondering why he wasn't getting inbound leads. "How many DMs are you sending per day?" That was my first question. His answer was zero. Some big business coach guy had said that cold outreach was a waste of time, and my client had listened to him. Content is great for getting clients eventually but the simple facts are:
Content creators publish posts and hope that they get leads from them. Copy Creators know that you need to go hunt for clients early on before you can enjoy inbound leads later in the process. My Copy Creator TemplateSo, how do you get clients with DMs and cold emails? The general principles are:
Let me help you with the first part. After sending tens of thousands of cold outreach messages, I came up with a rough template that works in any industry. It goes like this:
How that might look in practice: "Can I send you a free audit of your website copywriting? I ask because I did this for {different company in their industry} and raised their conversion rate from 0.8% to 1.7%. Let me know if that sounds interesting." The offer of free value makes your pitch appealing, the question makes it conversational, the context adds persuasive power, and the CTA makes them slightly more likely to answer. Most of your cold outreach will get ignored or rejected, but if you're not getting inbound leads yet, it's a great way to start earning, and that template is a great approach to it. Try it.
